Re: Help making a 3D cut sphere in Illustrator?

Sorry to revive an old thread - but I came across this and I'm trying to do pretty much the exact same thing, though maybe a bit more involved. I'm trying to make a figure to represent a polymer nanoparticle we're working on to treat cancer, and the particle is composed of several layers. It would be useful to be able to demonstrate this in a schematic where we could label what the different layers are. I hope someone might be able to help out.

So far I've tried making this using the 3D revolve on 7 concentric half-circles - and it brings me somewhat close to what I ultimately want. Here's what I have so far:

I've got the layers at 50% opacity right now to help me visualize it a bit better. In this picture I've made each "layer" slightly more open. So the inner most is a sphere, revolved at 360*, the next one out is revolved to 280*, the next to 270*, so on a so forth. This isn't essential, it was just an exploration to see if the different shapes could be overlaid to achieve the desired effect, but so far it hasn't really worked.

I'd like to get something that looks kind of like that multilayered half-donut that JET posted above. Here's another example, to give you guys a bit better idea of what I'm shooting for:

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help out.
