You need to twirl down the automation lanes - bottom left hand corner of the track control panel by where it says 'read' there's a triangle that controls the twirl down, and any effect that's applied to the track has automation lanes that can be controlled there - a lane for each parameter. That's why they aren't generally displayed - you can end up with one heck of a lot of potential control lanes!
